The research landscape is complex, and different actors have different options to help with a systemic move towards open science.

Educators

  • guide students through the research landscape
  • assess research for use in education
  • assess research by their students
  • are researchers themselves or interact with researchers
  • do many other things

In this thread, I would like us to explore which options educators have to explore open science themselves and to encourage it in the communities and other stakeholders they interact with.

If you have multiple ideas for concrete actions, I suggest to post them as separate answers (rather than as one monolithic answer), so as to facilitate the discussion and refinement of your ideas.

Release educational materials under an open license and in an open format that allows for adaptations.

If the education has students produce something (e.g. data, code, text, samples, questionnaires), consider whether that (or part of it) could be shared openly, either on its own or by way of contributing to an open project like Wikipedia or OpenStreetMap.

Look for existing open materials that cover some or all of what you need, and try to improve or fork these, rather than starting from scratch.

Introduce students to collaborative tools like Etherpads, wikis, Google Docs, git etc.

Ask Open Science used to be called Open Science Q&A but we changed the name when we registered the domain ask-open-science.org. Everything else stays the same: We are still hosted by Bielefeld University.
