I like the idea of open science, but I am worried about the financial status of an open science project. Are there any ways to get money from an open science project that are accepted by the open science community? Two things I thought of:

  • Asking for donations from the viewers of the project.
  • Advertising on the site where one can access the project

Apply for funding from a standard funding body, like the NIH? They usually prefer research to be as open as possible (save inasmuch as it prevents collaboration with industry). It's the lab heads / individual researchers who are reluctant, due to the way everyone (incl. the NIH) rewards being first-to-publish and publishing-in-a-high-impact-factor-journal.

As Rex mentioned in his comment, the best method is to apply for funding from an organization that does not explicitly prohibit open science. (e.g. certain military or security-related projects may disallow data sharing)

Regarding the two suggestions that you made in your question: those are completely acceptable. Honestly, those types of activities have less to do with open science and more to do with the logistics of running your project website.

Ask Open Science used to be called Open Science Q&A but we changed the name when we registered the domain ask-open-science.org. Everything else stays the same: We are still hosted by Bielefeld University.
